Search “bird spikes Delhi” and you’ll find prices running from ₹10 a strip to ₹150 a strip, half a dozen materials, and every seller confident theirs is the best. It’s genuinely confusing. So here’s a straight buyer’s guide — what actually matters, what doesn’t, and how to avoid replacing cheap spikes again next summer.

1. Material — this is the decision that matters most
You’ll mostly come across two:
UV-protected polycarbonate. Clear plastic spikes on a plastic base. The “UV-protected” part is the entire point. Delhi sun is brutal, and ordinary plastic turns yellow, brittle and snaps within a season or two. Properly UV-stabilised polycarbonate stays clear and flexible for years. For almost every home, this is what we’d recommend.
Stainless steel. Metal pins on a metal or plastic base. Stronger, pricier, and usually overkill for a home balcony. It earns its place on heavy-duty industrial or very exposed sites. For a typical Delhi flat, you’re paying more for durability you’ll never actually notice.
The one to avoid: plain non-UV PVC spikes. They’re the cheapest on the market and the single reason people walk around believing “spikes don’t last.”
2. Row count — match it to the ledge width
- 2-row spikes — for narrow ledges, railings, pipes, and the edge of an AC unit. Roughly 3–4 inch coverage.
- 4-row spikes — for wide ledges, parapets, beams and window sunshades. Roughly 6 inch coverage.
A common mistake is fitting 2-row on a wide parapet. The pigeons just land on the uncovered inner strip and you’re back to square one. Measure how deep the surface is and pick the width that genuinely covers it.
3. Base quality and the snap segments
Look for a strip with a wide, stable base and break-off segments so you can snap it to length by hand, no tools. A flimsy narrow base lifts at the edges and gives birds a toehold. Mounting holes in the base are a bonus — they let you cable-tie the strip for a permanent hold on metal.
4. What it should cost in Delhi (2026)
Rough, honest ranges so you can sense-check any quote you’re given:
- Genuine UV polycarbonate: a modest per-strip price; you buy by running length
- Stainless steel: noticeably higher per strip
- “Too cheap to be true”: almost always non-UV plastic that won’t survive one Delhi summer
The real cost isn’t the spike — it’s redoing the job. Spikes that crack in eight months cost you twice. This is the one place we’d actively tell you not to chase the lowest price.
5. Red flags of a bad bird spike
- Yellowish or cloudy plastic straight out of the packet — already low-grade
- Very thin, sharp pins that bend and snap easily
- No clear UV-protection claim, or a vague one
- A base that flexes and curls when you bend it
- A seller who can’t tell you the material plainly
6. How many strips will you need?
Simple: measure the total running length, in feet, of every surface you want to protect — railing + AC + parapet. That’s roughly how many feet of spike strip to order. What we’d actually recommend for a Delhi home
For about 90% of balconies and AC units: UV-protected polycarbonate — 2-row for railings and AC units, 4-row for parapets — with a wide base and snap segments. Installed properly, that’s a 7–10 year fix and you forget about it.
